What Is an ROC Number in Malaysia?
If youve ever registered a company with SSM (Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia), youve probably seen a long number printed on your company documents thats your ROC number. This article explains what an ROC number means, how it differs from the old registration number format, and why SSM Malaysia updated it. What Is an ROC Number? ROC stands for Registrar of Companies, referring to Sdn. Bhd. (Private Limited) and Berhad (Public Limited) companies registered under the Companies Act 2016. The ROC Number (also known as Company Registration Number) is a unique identifier assigned to every company in Malaysia by SSM. Example: Old Format: 1234567-A New Format: 202101234567 (1234567-A) Both refer to the same company but the new format follows SSMs updated numbering system. Old ROC Number Format (Before 2019) Before 2019, Malaysian companies used a 7-digit number followed by a suffix letter, such as: 1234567-A (for companies) 1234567-U (for foreign companies) While simple, this old format caused confusion because: Some states used overlapping numbers There was no clear indication of registration year Integration with online systems and government databases was difficult ![]() New ROC Number Format (After 2019) In October 2019, SSM introduced a new standard format for all business entities including ROC (Sdn Bhd/Bhd) and ROB (Enterprise) to unify and digitize the business registration system. The new format looks like this: YYYYMM###### (Old Number) Example: 202101234567 (1234567-A) Heres what it means: YYYY = Year of registration (e.g. 2021) MM = Month of registration (e.g. 01 for January) ###### = Running serial number ( ) = Old ROC number retained for reference Summary Your ROC number is the official identification of your registered company with SSM. Since 2019, SSM has standardized all business registration numbers to improve digital integration and clarity. Both old and new numbers remain valid but the new format is now used in official documents Disclaimer :
